This is a false statement.

Allusions in poetry are both very important to the reader of the poem and the poet. While an allusion does represent or signify something special in the poet’s life or experience, the reader’s understanding of the themes discussed in the poem is often strengthened by understanding the significance of the allusion and what the alluded work represents. This makes allusions very important in the process of understanding the deeper meanings in poetry.
