Why was Mendel’s work no accepted at the time?

While the experiments and observation were replicable no mechanism was known or could be found at the time. Also he did his work in monastery which was outside the access of much of the scientific community so few other scientist read his paper.   Mendel was ahead of time and nobody knew about chromosomes or genes and were left confused. He died 20 years later with all ideas ignored. 16 year after his death his work was finally recognized (1900)
