What is the value of 2 + 5x – x2 when x = –2 ?

Just sub in - 2 for x. So the equation will look like 2 + 5(-2) - (-2)². First multiply (-2)², which is 4, and then do 5(-2) which is -10. Do -10 - 4 to get -14. Add 2 to that and you get -12.
