you have to get 8 on the other side. so what you do is you subtract by 8 on both sides. that cancels out the 8 on the left side and allows you to move it to the other side. after that you still have a negative y so you divide everything by -1 which will give you your answer

8 - y = x        Subtract 8 from both sides
    -y = x - 8   Divide both sides by -1
     y = -x + 8
