Serbian nationalists killed him because the country he was the prince of controlled a large portion of Serbian people who wanted independence but the Austrian Hungarian government denied them this right. All the while, the country of Serbia was also an existing nation which caused even more tension because the Serbian people knew that there was a nation right next to theirs where they would be greatly represented.
