Their is a village close by, but there are no large cities for many miles. Is this sentence correct in grammar?

No it is not because of "Their.." It would be there instead of their because Their represents a possessiveness of something and "Their" cannot possess ''is"
No, because the wrong "their" is used. Instead, the sentence should be:
There is a village close by, but there are no large cities for many miles.
