well its an island nation so they can be sucluded in art, philosophy, religion and thought. its also relativly easy to cross from one end of the island to the other so that means you can conquor one of your neighbors but then turn around and be on the defensive from your other neighbor. feudal japenese armies can dish out a punch but cant take one very well.
