It mostly led to many of the colonies being based around a certain religion or a nationality. For example, Maryland was established to protect Catholics from religious persecution since most of the colonies were puritan. Massachusetts was so populate by Irish people that there are now more people of Irish origin in the US than in Ireland itself. These are just examples but there are many more where diversity influenced how colonial governments developed.
