the first thing we want to do is get rid of those (), because we can't work with x while it's inside those. the distributive property says that we can get rid of the () by multiplying everything inside by the number just before the ().

so we have 3x -5(3) + 2(3x) + 2(1) = 41
then we can multiply out some of those terms to get 3x - 15 + 6x + 2 = 41
combining like terms, we get 3x + 6x - 15 + 2 = 41, and then 9x - 13 = 41
add 13 to both sides. 9x = 54.
divide both sides by 9 to get x = 6.
