What made it difficult for early United States leaders to maintain neutrality during conflicts between France and Great Britain?

What made it difficult for them to maintain neutrality was that they were helped by the French to gain independence from Great Britain in the first place. This had naturally an important effect on how the US handled its relationships with Britain and France.
