Why might people not have believed Galileo's discoveries

in his teachings, he defended heliocentrism . heliocentrism proved that earth is not the center of the universe, which went against the bible, and therefore the catholic church. the rejection of heliocentrism by the catholic church caused many to turn their backs on galileo and his beliefs/ teachings.
