The chemical substance leptin, released by fat cells, decreases food intake and increases energy expenditure or metabolism.   Leptin is a hormone that regulates energy balance and it is also called “the hormone of energy expenditure” or “the starvation hormone”. Its function is to suppress food intake and thereby it induce weight loss.
