the shapes being similar means they are an even ratio to each other. the one on the left is 16/12 or 4/3 the one on the right. 
this means you can say [tex] \frac{4}{3}(x-1)=6 [/tex]
and then solve for x.
(x-1)=4.5
x=5.5
